Foundation
Springstone farmhouse is built on solid rock which is quite probably over half a mile thick. This rock is a relatively small sandstone outcrop sandwiched between two limestone seams. With rock as a foundation this means 20ft high walls built 200 years ago are as straight today as the day they were completed. This rock also isolates us from land-based vibration and this total stillness gives the house and buildings a peace and quiet that is priceless.
On top of this foundation are built the 2ft thick walls that make the farmhouse. The stone from these walls has been excavated from the stone face to the south of the property (our very own 'quarry', so to speak) - and very nice stone it is too, a lovely red colour with, strangely enough, lots of quartz veins running through it. It also splits easily with a bolster.
Incidentally, large chunks of quartz are commonly found in the garden - some too big to lift - and a lot of this type of rock has also been used in the building of the farmhouse.
